Explore living history at Rochefort Castle
A short distance from our Mercure hotel in Han-sur-Lesse, discover the fascinating Rochefort Castle, a witness to a rich history dating back to the 11th century. The first mention in 1155 of “Rocha Fortis” or the “fortified rock” gave its name to the flourishing town of Rochefort.
Evolution through the centuries
Over the centuries, the castle has evolved from a fortress to a noble residence. In the 16th century, Louis de Stolberg redesigned the place, adding a vast terrace with cannons and making significant changes to the structure. In the 17th century, the castle was the center of a lavish court, bringing together hunting dogs, a horse stable, and sumptuous evenings.
During the French Revolution in 1795, the castle was seized and sold, leading to a period of abandonment. Fortunately, since 1987, the castle ruins have been open to the public, offering a captivating glimpse into Rochefort’s past.
